What is the point of The Blackening? ›

Characters are playing the game and fighting for their lives, but underneath, “The Blackening” points a finger at the ways Blackness is defined by a rubric and the litany of ways to have your card revoked. It's all in lighthearted fun to strip Blackness because of not seeing “Friday,” and Story acknowledges this.

Seven friends go away for the weekend, only to find themselves trapped in a cabin with a killer who has a vendetta. They must pit their street smarts and knowledge of horror movies against the murderer to stay alive.

They are the Connor twins, Camden and Clive. Clifton hired the two rednecks to wear the masks and try and kill his former friends. He offered them only $100 per person they killed. The Connor twins being The Blackening's killers is subtly set up throughout the movie.

The Blackening VIOLENCE/GORE 6. – Two people fight with a man trying to kill them, he is shot in the head with an arrow and falls to the floor, he sits up and pulls the arrow out and a woman beats him with a large candlestick repeatedly (below the frame) until blood and matter spray on her clothing and face.

Right from the start, it becomes clear that this horror-comedy will lean a lot more into the comedy side. As the film begins, words come onto the screen which says, “Based on true events…which never happened.” Since the film is more heavy-handed on comedy, almost all 90 minutes of The Blackening are totally hilarious.

It is mostly comedy however some jokes may fly over your children's heads, it is also not too scary. Some characters are on drugs throughout the movie and the killer is racist but there are 7 black main characters. Overall, it's a funny movie and I would watch again. 13-12+ I'd say.

With that, the movie's final act reveals that Clifton orchestrated the whole thing, desperate to make the others pay for "revoking his Black card" after he fluffed up a game of Spades 10 years prior.
