Goedkope slasherfilms uit de jaren tachtig hadden een plot dat kwalitatief net zo hoog was als het budget. Meer was ook niet nodig, het moest gewoon tienervermaak zijn met eventueel een luchtige boodschap (meestal "begin niet te jong aan seks", want flikflooiende personages werden aan het mes geregen). Het was aan de tieners of ze daar wat mee deden. Cocaine Bear laat wel beelden zien van de antidrugs-campagne uit dat decennium, maar de meeste slachtoffers zijn onschuldige mensen en de beer is uiteindelijk gewoon een beest dat lekker z'n ding wil doen.
1985. Een drugssmokkelaar maakt een foutje waardoor hij ergens in een woonwijk te pletter valt. De tassen vol cocaïne die hij uit het vliegtuig gooide, liggen nu voor het oprapen in de Appalachen. Alleen een drugsbaron weet ervan en stuurt een paar mensen om ze te halen. Intussen is een beer op het witte poeder gestuit en er ongeremd aan verslaafd geraakt. Alle bezoekers van het natuurpark zijn een doelwit, inclusief twee spijbelende kinderen.
Wanneer Elizabeth Banks voor de camera staat met een grappig script kan ze je met weinig moeite aan het lachen krijgen. Zelfs in serieuzere rollen is ze een prima actrice. Wanneer ze in de regiestoel plaatsneemt, is succes niet verzekerd. Haar Pitch Perfect 2 zat vol opmerkingen die zelfs in 2015 al niet meer gepast waren, en haar Charlie's Angels miste helaas de geschikte cast en dikke korrel zout voor een tweede remake van een verouderde serie (voorganger McG had al laten zien welke toon daar perfect voor is).
Banks geeft aan zelf nooit cocaïne te hebben gebruikt, maar de schrijver van Cocaine Bear haalt waarschijnlijk graag een wit neusje. Dat moet hij zelf weten, maar waarom moeten gebruikers het toch altijd zo opdringen aan anderen? Best choquerend dat Banks in deze film twee twaalfjarigen allebei een flinke hap cocaïne in hun mond laat stoppen. Ze spugen het meteen weer uit maar de nonchalance waarmee beide kinderen bereid zijn om harddrugs uit te proberen is in deze tijd van groeiend gebruik onder jongeren onverstandig.
Banks is geen slechte regisseur en ze gaat professioneel te werk (ook al is haar stijl niet indrukwekkend), maar deze film is geen gelukkige keuze. Als Hollywoodster heeft ze wel het geluk dat bekende namen komen opdraven. De cast bestaat onder andere uit drie sterren uit de serie The Americans (Keri Russell, haar echtgenoot Matthew Rhys en Margo Martindale die het grappigst is van iedereen), en wijlen Ray Liotta in een van zijn laatste optredens.
Ook Jesse Tyler Ferguson, bekend als Mitchell uit Modern Family, is van de partij. Waarschijnlijk omdat de film geproduceerd is door twee heren die die serie maakten. Het is duidelijk dat iedereen met plezier op de set stond, al blijven gekunstelde improvisatiescènes gelukkig uit. Ook de Nederlandse Hannah Hoekstra die al eerder met Banks samenwerkte is even te zien.
Zij ziet als een van de eersten de beer, maar vreemd genoeg is het beest dan al helemaal hyper van de drugs. Er zijn geen beelden van hoe die beer per toeval op zo'n tas vol poeder stuit en voor het eerst ervaart hoe het is om high te zijn. Jammer, want zo valt de eerste berenaanval een beetje rauw op je dak. Het hele scenario is een ritmisch rommeltje. De rode draad is eigenlijk Keri Russell die haar vermiste dochter probeert te vinden, maar daar wordt nog de minste tijd aan besteed.
De meeste aandacht gaat uit naar de twee handlangers die de tassen moeten vinden en terugbrengen. Bij de ingang van het park stuiten ze op drie gewelddadige maar knullige punkers die een van de handlangers proberen te beroven. Die scène is in z'n geheel een extreem geslaagde kopie van films uit de jaren tachtig. Het onzinnige moment zelf, de set, de kleding en het acteerwerk. Toch lijkt het onbedoeld, want de rest van Cocaine Bear is gewoon een moderne productie.
Het is een project van een Hollywoodkliekje dat zelf het idee grappig vond, en verwacht dat de wereld hier op zit te wachten. Met zo'n titel en zo'n premisse trekt het ongetwijfeld genoeg publiek om uit de kosten te komen, die vast niet erg hoog waren. Wellicht ging het meeste budget naar de beer, maar zelfs die is regelmatig overduidelijk computergegenereerd. Je krijgt wat je verwacht, maar het had best iets meer mogen zijn dan dit.
