Who would pass up the chance to chill out at Dunlap Canyon Retreat? Just three miles off Highway 180, this vast 22-acre site comes with gorgeous mountain scenery that might have you gazing dreamily for hours on end; if the spectacle of nature is not enough to keep you entertained, the place is attached to a further 36 acres where hang-gliders and paragliders like to land. When you’re not getting a good show from a sunrise over the Sierra Nevada mountains or a swooping hang-glider, you can get yourself over to Sequoia National Park, which is about 28 miles (a 55-minute drive) away. Its mountains, canyons and caves aren’t even what makes this place popular; the gigantic sequoia trees are. There are hikes for all levels of ability here, but be sure to equip yourself with a map before you set off. Kings Canyon National Park (half an hour along Highway 180) has yet more impressive trees, including General Grant Tree, the second-largest sequoia in the world. The landscape here is similar to that of the Yosemite Valley, and trails winding past waterfalls, rivers, meadows and canyons will keep you busy. Back at base, the facilities include toilets with showers and water points. Barbecues and a seasonal pond are just more strings to Dunlap Canyon Retreat’s bow. It’s also handy that it’s a short drive away from a convenience store, a handful of restaurants and a couple of wineries (all under 15 minutes’ drive or so). For a taste of the city, Fresno is 45 minutes away.

Non-electric grass touring caravan or trailer tent pitch (water hook-up)
Liked: My wife and I enjoyed a very nice stay. The area was well maintained, colorfully eclectic, and had everything we needed. Spencer, the campground host, is one of the friendliest and most earnest people I have met. He made a point of getting to know all the guests, and make every effort to make us happy. A scenic drive to the Sequia National Park. As an extra treat, there was a beautiful wildflower and tree bloom happening.
